The 7 best LEGO sets under $200, ranked

1. 31212 The Milky Way Galaxy ($199.99, 3,091 pieces)

The best rating of the 13, 4.9 from 279 reviews, and the most pieces. It is a LEGO Art wall piece, so it needs a wall, not a shelf.

Space.com's review called it possibly "one of our favorite space-themed sets ever released" and warned: "be prepared to spend around eight hours with it." A lego.com buyer, Mr.fixitbrickman, put it simply: "Pictures do not do this beautiful piece justice."

Pick for: a space fan with a bare wall. Why: 4.9 stars at 6.5 cents a piece. The catch: a flat mosaic, not a model you can pick up.

2. 10318 Concorde ($199.99, 2,083 pieces)

The most-reviewed set here, 495 reviews at 4.7. Brick Fanatics' 2023 review said "It's easily one of the best 18+ sets that the LEGO Group has ever designed".

Buyer NicestYawningMorro gave a useful number: "build time for a relatively beginner/intermediate builder was 13.5 hours". Brick Fanatics gives the model as 105 cm long, so measure your shelf first.

Pick for: an aviation fan. Why: 495 reviews and 4.7 stars. The catch: 9.6 cents a piece, the dearest of the 13 with the New York set.

3. 11384 Golden Retriever Puppy ($139.99, 2,102 pieces)

The value pick: 6.7 cents a piece, more than 2,000 pieces under $150. It rated 4.7 from 45 reviews.

Buyer SlowCentipede084 wrote: "This Lego was a joy to assemble."

Pick for: a dog owner. Why: 2,102 pieces at $139.99. The catch: 45 reviews is a small sample next to the Concorde's 495.

4. 76444 Diagon Alley Wizarding Shops ($199.99, 2,750 pieces)

A long micro-scale street of shops at 7.3 cents a piece, 4.7 from 80 reviews. Read the scale before you buy. One buyer, lowriw3_341, wrote: "Didn't realise until it arrived that it was microlego".

Pick for: a Harry Potter fan with a long shelf. Why: 2,750 pieces and Available now. The catch: the figures are tiny; its sibling 76419 is cheaper per piece but was Temporarily out of stock on Oct 25.

5. 72050 Mario Kart: Luigi & Mach 8 ($179.99, 2,234 pieces)

Rated 4.9 from 44 reviews. New Elementary's review, written with a copy from LEGO, had one reservation: "While the decision to use highly specialised moulds remains contentious among many fans, I reluctantly accept them in this instance."

Pick for: a Mario Kart fan. Why: 4.9 stars and 8.1 cents a piece. The catch: specialised parts, as New Elementary noted.

6. 21066 New York City: The Big Apple ($139.99, 1,465 pieces)

Rated 4.8 from 25 reviews. New Elementary did the arithmetic for us, "9.6¢" a piece in the US, and was cautious: "If you are a more traditional LEGO Architecture fan, I'm not sure those three structures justify getting the whole set."

Pick for: a New York souvenir. Why: 4.8 stars. The catch: 9.6 cents a piece, tied for the highest here.

7. 11381 Jaguar E-Type ($139.99, 1,673 pieces)

The lowest rating of the 13, 4.0 from 65 reviews, yet New Elementary's parts review recommended it on value: "1673 pieces for £129.99 and a PPG of 7.4p make this an easy recommendation to justify." In the US it is $139.99, 8.4 cents a piece.

Pick for: a classic-car fan. Why: 1,673 pieces under $140. The catch: buyers rate it lower than anything else on the list.

Desk note: in our Oct 25 catalog read, 26 of the 70 sets in this band were not Available now. One had just slipped: 31215 Vincent van Gogh Sunflowers ($199.99) went from Available now to "Will ship in 60 days" between our Oct 23 and Oct 25 reads. If your pick reads a ship date, it may still arrive before Christmas, but not this week.

Our take

Buy the Milky Way Galaxy for one $200 set; buy the Golden Retriever to spend $60 less. The Milky Way has 4.9 stars at 6.5 cents a piece. The puppy has 2,102 pieces at 6.7 cents.

Buy now if you want 76444 Diagon Alley: its cheaper sibling was already out of stock on Oct 25. Skip or wait if your pick has no badge and you can wait for Black Friday on November 27.

What we don't know yet: whether lego.com will discount any of these on Black Friday. On our watchlist: we re-read these 13 pages at each catalog fetch.
