Best LEGO Sets for 8 to 12 Year Olds: 10 Top-Rated Picks

LEGO sets for 8 to 12 year olds include Technic cars, display models and a 1,048-piece Grogu, not only playsets. On October 11, 2026 we went through lego.com's age pages and kept ten sets marked 8+ to 10+ that were Available now, had no Retiring soon badge and were rated 4.8 stars or more by at least 8 reviewers. They cost $27.99 to $99.99.

LEGO sets for 8 to 12 year olds: the quick answer

Match the theme first, then the mark. For an 8 or 9 year old, start with the 8+ and 9+ sets; for 10 to 12, the 10+ mark opens up display builds like Grogu. All ten in this list were in stock on lego.com on October 11, 2026, and none was marked 11+ or 12+, because no set with those marks passed our filter. On October 22, nine were Available now; 76445 Hogwarts Castle: Herbology Class read Temporarily out of stock.

Overview: how we picked

On October 11, 2026 we read every product on lego.com's 6+ age page (941 products, for 6, 7 and 8 year olds) and 9+ age page (920 products, for 9 to 12 year olds) from the page data. We kept sets marked 8+ to 12+ that were Available now, had no Retiring soon badge and cost under $100. From those we drew a shortlist across themes, opened each shortlisted product page and kept the sets showing 4.8 stars or more from at least 8 reviews. We left out sets that need a part sold in another set, then picked one per theme so the list covers different interests.

Prices are lego.com US list prices, the same on October 11 and October 22, 2026; none was discounted. Ratings are the averages shown on each product page on Oct 22. Cents per piece is our arithmetic. 77059 and 71868 carried lego.com's New label.

Best for ages 8 and 9

77257 McLaren W1 ($27.99, 9+) is the cheapest pick and a real car with "an adjustable rear wing". Hispabrick Magazine's reviewer was honest about it: "it has to be the weaker of the three new Speed Champions hypercars, at least in terms of how well it represents its real hypercar counterpart, but it is still a very good set."

31384 Wild Animals: Colorful Hummingbird ($29.99, 8+) has a 5 star average from 31 reviews and offers "3 different building options with the same set of bricks". 75688 Glinda's Wedding Day ($39.99, 8+) is the most reviewed of the 8+ picks, 39, at 4.9 stars; lego.com says kids "pull apart the giant posable LEGO butterfly building toys to reveal the wedding scene".

76445 Hogwarts Castle: Herbology Class ($49.99, 8+) is a greenhouse classroom "that opens up for easy play", with "3 LEGO Harry Potter Mandrake toy plants created especially for this set". On Oct 22 it read Temporarily out of stock on lego.com, so check the page before you plan on it. 21590 Wither Battle ($64.99, 8+) is the Minecraft pick: a Crimson Warrior against "2 wither skeletons".

42222 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport Hypercar ($64.99, 9+, 771 pieces) is the only Technic set in our list, with a W16 engine, opening doors and a steering knob on top. OmarR, who received it free from LEGO, wrote that "the build took about 3-4 hours taking my time to enjoy the process."

71868 Wyldfyre's Transforming Dragon Mech ($89.99, 9+) turns "from a large posable dragon toy with 4 legs into a formidable mech figure armed with a large sword" and comes with 6 minifigures. Redence, reviewing it on June 5, 2026, wrote: "The transformation is incredibly easy, all you do is hinge the dragon's torso fowards, then reposition the limbs to put it in mech mode".

Best for ages 10 to 12

43012 Cristiano Ronaldo Soccer Highlights ($29.99, 10+) is the best value in the list at 6.1 cents a piece, a "collectible display model that celebrates Cristiano Ronaldo". 77059 Timmy & Tommy's Fun Day Out ($59.99, 10+) is pitched by lego.com as "an authentic piece of gaming decor" with "2 posable, brick-built figures".

75403 Grogu with Hover Pram ($99.99, 10+, 1,048 pieces) is the top-reviewed set here: 4.9 stars from 74 reviews. Grogu "has dial-operated arms and posable head and ears". Jay's Brick Blog's review noted that "Despite its display model-like design, the set is still designated as a 10+ set instead of an 18+ collectors’ model".

Analysis: a SMART Play warning, and what missed the cut

LEGO's newsroom describes its SMART Play system as "powered by the LEGO SMART Brick". Not every SMART Play set has one. On October 22, the lego.com page for 72161 SMART Play: Drone Search for Mythical Mew ($49.99, 8+) read "SMART Brick not included", and its description says the bricks are "found in All-In-One Sets (sold separately)". OlgaM, who received the Mew set free from LEGO, wrote: "One downside is that this set does not come with a Smart Brick, which I do wish was included." It passed our rating filter (4.8 from 8), but we left it out for that reason. If you want SMART Play, 72164 Training House with Pikachu ($69.99, 6+) lists "1 x SMART Brick" in the box, though its rating was lower, 4.6 from 32.

Other shortlisted sets that passed the filter but did not make our ten: 77119 Tails' Tornado-1 and 21593 First Night Adventure (both 4.8 from 9). Shortlisted sets that missed: 77254 Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale and 31393 Gray Wolf (4.7), and 21595 The Ender Dragon (6 reviews) and 76788 Nevermore Academy (2) had too few reviews to judge.

If the child already has a favourite theme, our theme hubs group the sets lego.com lists in it by status, such as Technic, Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Our take

Based on the lego.com ratings and prices above, an 8 year old who reads and builds on their own is well served by the Hummingbird or Glinda's Wedding Day, both under $40 and rated 4.9 or 5. A 9 year old into cars is the clear case for the Bugatti: 771 pieces and a reviewer's 3 to 4 hour build for $64.99. For 10 to 12, Grogu is the safe big gift and the Ronaldo set is the value pick. Skip SMART Play sets marked SMART Brick not included unless the child already owns a SMART Brick. Ratings and stock change, so we will re-check this list every 45 days.

How we checked this

On October 11, 2026 we read every product on lego.com's 6+ and 9+ age pages from the page data in a headless browser, then opened the product page of each set on our shortlist and copied price, pieces, age mark, rating, review count, stock and badges from the visible page. We copied lego.com review quotes with the reviewer's name, date and whether they received the set free. We read LEGO's June 2, 2026 newsroom post on the Pokémon SMART Play sets, Hispabrick Magazine's review of 77257 and Jay's Brick Blog's review of 75403. On October 22 we opened the product pages of all ten picks, 72161 and 72164 again for price, rating, review count, stock and badge, and found each quoted review still on lego.com. Cents per piece is our arithmetic, and a second pass compared every number with our source table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What LEGO set should I buy an 8 year old? Start with an 8+ set in a theme the child already likes. On October 22, 2026 two of our 8+ picks you could order on lego.com were 31384 Colorful Hummingbird ($29.99, 5 stars from 31 reviews) and 75688 Glinda's Wedding Day ($39.99, 4.9 from 39). 76445 Hogwarts Castle Herbology Class ($49.99, 4.9 from 29) read Temporarily out of stock that day.

What is a good LEGO set for a 10 year old? For a 10 year old who likes to display what they build, 75403 Grogu with Hover Pram ($99.99) had the most reviews in our list, 74, at 4.9 stars on October 22, 2026. For a 9+ car, 42222 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport ($64.99, 771 pieces) is the only Technic set in our list.

Is a 10+ LEGO set too hard for an 8 year old? The number on the box is an age recommendation, not a test. A reviewer at Jay's Brick Blog noted that the 10+ Grogu with Hover Pram looks like a display model but is labelled 10+ rather than 18+. For an 8 year old, an 8+ set is the safer start; a 10+ set is a step up.

Do LEGO SMART Play sets come with the SMART Brick? Not all of them. On October 22, 2026, the lego.com page for 72161 Drone Search for Mythical Mew read SMART Brick not included. 72164 Training House with Pikachu ($69.99) is an All-In-One Set with a SMART Brick, SMART Charger and 4 SMART Tags. Check the box before buying.

How much should I spend on a LEGO set for a 12 year old? Our ten picks run from $27.99 to $99.99 on lego.com as of October 22, 2026. The best value per piece was 43012 Cristiano Ronaldo Soccer Highlights, 490 pieces for $29.99. Above $60, the Technic Bugatti and the NINJAGO dragon mech give the most pieces in this list after Grogu.
