LEGO sets for 4 to 7 year olds, 10 picks from $9.99 to $74.99 that lego.com buyers rate 4.8 stars or more and that are not retiring. Prices as of Oct 11.

LEGO Classic Creative Dinosaurs 11041, brick-built T. rex, triceratops, brontosaurus and pterosaur figures with a small volcano and palm tree

LEGO sets for 4 to 7 year olds cover two of lego.com's age pages: one for 4 and 5 year olds, one for 6, 7 and 8 year olds. On October 20, 2026 they listed 324 and 936 products. We cut that down to ten picks, none with a Retiring soon badge, and all rated 4.8 stars or more by at least 8 lego.com reviewers. They cost $9.99 to $74.99, and eight of them were Available now on October 20.

LEGO sets for 4 to 7 year olds: the quick answer

Buy by the age mark on the box first, then by what the child already likes. For a 4 or 5 year old, pick a set marked 4+ or 5+, the marks lego.com groups on its page for that age. For a 6 or 7 year old, the 7+ sets in this list add a pull-back Technic truck, a Minecraft biome or a display model. All ten were in stock on lego.com on October 11, 2026; on October 20, 42681 Axolotl Adventure Boat read Will ship by November 7 and 42219 Grave Digger Will ship in 60 days.

Key Takeaways

  • 10 picks, $314.90 together, 4.8 to 5 stars on lego.com, each from 9 to 30 reviews.
  • Best value per piece: 11041 Creative Dinosaurs, 450 pieces for $34.99 (7.8 cents a piece).
  • Cheapest: 42681 Axolotl Adventure Boat at $9.99.
  • None has the badge: we left out every set with lego.com's Retiring soon badge on October 11.
  • Small parts: six of the ten product pages showed lego.com's choking warning for children under 3 at the top of the page.

Overview: how we picked

On October 11, 2026 we read every product on lego.com's 4+ age page (324 products) and 6+ age page (941 products) from the page data. We kept sets marked 4+ to 7+ that were Available now, had no Retiring soon badge and cost under $100. From those we drew a shortlist across themes, opened each shortlisted product page and kept the sets showing 4.8 stars or more from at least 8 reviews. Then we picked one or two per theme so the list covers different interests.

Best for ages 4 and 5

75443 Grogu's Homestead ($19.99) is the cheapest 4+ pick. lego.com calls it "an inspiring first build-and-play experience" for ages 4 plus, with "an easy-to-build, posable Grogu figure".

11221 School with Rusty and Bluey ($24.99) has the fewest reviews of the ten, 9, but every one is 5 stars. SamanthaH, who received it free from LEGO, wrote: "I'd absolutely recommend this fun Lego set for little kids who are just moving on from duplo to Lego."

60492 Passenger Jet and 42696 Animal Vet Clinic are both $29.99 and marked 4+. The jet's page says kids can "open the fuselage to access the cabin and cockpit". The vet clinic has the most reviews of the 4+ picks, 28, and comes with "a horse stable, an examination room, pet beds". LEGO's own parents' guide says Friends sets "are typically aimed at kids aged 6-9, though kids as young as four and older kids also enjoy them", and this one is a 4+ entry point. For a smaller budget, 42681 Axolotl Adventure Boat ($9.99, 5+) is the other Friends pick.

11041 Creative Dinosaurs ($34.99, 5+) is the best value here at 7.8 cents a piece. lego.com describes "a T. rex, pterosaur, triceratops, brontosaurus and a baby T. rex in an egg" and calls it an "endlessly versatile building set".

Best for ages 6 and 7

None of our picks is marked 6+; our four picks for this age are all marked 7+.

21586 The Pale Garden ($19.99) is the cheapest 7+ pick and has a 5 star average from 21 reviews. It is a Minecraft biome with "a Creeper™ and skeleton" and a brick-built creaking.

42219 Monster Jam Grave Digger Fire and Ice ($34.99) is a pull-back Technic truck. Hispabrick Magazine's reviewer wrote that, with the age set at seven, "the building process is easier, and the instruction steps spread more generously, than one would expect for a “usual” Technic set". GemmaS, who received it free from LEGO, wrote: "my young lad loved building it and making it pull back".

43286 The Aristocats Adorable Marie ($34.99) has the most reviews of the ten, 30, with a 5 star average. It is a posable brick-built cat for "creative play and a fun room decor display". ChloeG, who received it free from LEGO, wrote that it has "Easy to follow instructions for both children and adults."

60506 Classic Beach Streetcar ($74.99) is the big one: 693 pieces, with a station track and passengers, and lego.com's New label.

Analysis: small parts and younger siblings

Six of our ten picks showed a choking warning at the top of their lego.com page. On 42681, 75443, 11221 and 42696 it reads: "WARNING! CHOKING HAZARD. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years." US rules require a label like it. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission's summary says toys with small parts "intended for use by children from 3 to 6 years old must be labeled to warn purchasers not to buy them for children under 3 years old". Its safety guide for parents adds that "some toys are recommended for older children because they may be hazardous in the hands of a younger child." If a 4 year old shares a room with a baby, the bricks need a shelf or a box with a lid.

What else did not make the cut? Some sets missed the 4.8 bar on October 11: 60487 Yellow Taxi (4.7) and 72164 SMART Play Training House with Pikachu (4.6 from 32 reviews). Others had too few reviews to judge, such as 77978 Young T. rex Transport Truck (4) and 71865 Zane's Ice Dragon Battle (3). And we skipped any set with the Retiring soon badge; our LEGO City retiring list covers those for City.

If your child already has a favourite theme, our theme hubs group the sets lego.com lists in it by status, such as City, Friends and Minecraft.

Our take

Based on the lego.com ratings and prices above, a 4 year old who has never built LEGO is best served by Grogu's Homestead or the Bluey school: both are 4+, under $25 and rated 4.9 or 5. For a 5 year old who likes making things up, Creative Dinosaurs gives the most bricks for the money. For a 7 year old, the Grave Digger is the easy way into Technic, though it was on a 60-day ship date on October 20, and The Pale Garden is the cheapest pick for a Minecraft fan. If you want one bigger box under the tree, the Classic Beach Streetcar is the only pick over $35. Ratings and stock change, so we will re-check this list every 45 days.

How we checked this

On October 11, 2026 we read every product on lego.com's 4+ and 6+ age pages from the page data in a headless browser, then opened the product page of each set on our shortlist and copied price, pieces, age mark, rating, review count, stock and badges from the visible page. We copied lego.com review quotes with the reviewer's name, date and whether they received the set free. We read the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's small-parts summary and its parents' toy safety guide, LEGO's Friends parents' guide and Hispabrick Magazine's review of 42219. On October 20 we read both age pages and the ten product pages again and re-opened the three review sections to match each quote. Cents per piece is our arithmetic, and a second pass compared every number with our source table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good first LEGO set for a 4 year old? Look for sets marked 4+, which lego.com files under its page for 4 and 5 year olds. On October 11, 2026 three of our 4+ picks were 75443 Grogu's Homestead ($19.99, 4.9 stars from 20 reviews), 11221 School with Rusty and Bluey ($24.99, 5 from 9) and 42696 Animal Vet Clinic ($29.99, 4.9 from 28).

Are LEGO sets safe for a 4 year old with a baby sibling? The sets are aimed at the child on the box, but their small parts are not safe for a baby. Six of our ten picks showed lego.com's choking warning for children under 3 at the top of the product page, and US rules require that warning on small-part toys meant for ages 3 to 6. Keep the bricks out of reach.

What LEGO set should I buy a 7 year old? For a 7 year old we picked four 7+ sets that lego.com buyers rated 4.8 or higher on October 11, 2026: 21586 The Pale Garden ($19.99), 42219 Monster Jam Grave Digger Fire and Ice ($34.99), 43286 The Aristocats Adorable Marie ($34.99) and 60506 Classic Beach Streetcar ($74.99).

How much should I spend on a LEGO set for a 5 year old? Our ten picks run from $9.99 to $74.99 on lego.com as of October 11, 2026, and nine of them cost $34.99 or less. For a 5 year old, 42681 Axolotl Adventure Boat is $9.99 and 11041 Creative Dinosaurs, the most pieces for the money in this list, is $34.99.

Can a 4 year old build a 7+ LEGO set? The number on the box is an age recommendation, and the US safety agency's guide tells parents to follow such labels. A reviewer at Hispabrick Magazine found the 7+ Grave Digger easier to build than a usual Technic set, but for a 4 year old a 4+ set is the safer start.
