Overview: the two sets side by side

Shenron is a LEGO Icons set, the first LEGO Dragon Ball product, revealed in the LEGO newsroom on September 29. lego.com describes the dragon "in a dramatic coiled pose, rising from 7 Dragon Balls", with a detachable Kid Goku on the Kintoun cloud.

Rayquaza is a LEGO Pokémon set that went on sale on August 1. It recreates the Sky Pillar scene from Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, per LEGO's July announcement, with a Zinnia minifigure holding a Mega Stone. lego.com says the dragon can be detached and displayed on its own.

Price per piece and Insiders points

The $50 gap buys 681 extra pieces. Per piece, that makes Shenron the cheaper model at about 10.2 cents against Rayquaza's 12.0. In our Dragon Ball Shenron & Goku 11390 guide, Shenron also beat Optimus Prime and Soundwave on the same measure.

Insiders points follow the price. lego.com showed 845 points on Rayquaza on Oct 24, about $6.50 back at 650 points to $5 (our catalog saw 1,690 during the double-points week of Oct 13 to 19). At 6.5 points per dollar, Shenron should earn about 1,170, roughly $9.00. Our Insiders points calculator does the conversion for any set.

Winner on this axis: Shenron, by 1.8 cents a piece.

Display size and what you build

Here Rayquaza fights back. LEGO gives it over 15 in. (38 cm) of height, 6 cm more than Shenron, for less money. Its tail and body can be reconfigured and the arms and head are jointed, per lego.com. Shenron's head and claws pose, and the newsroom says the design team "studied animation frames and classic poses" from the original series.

The extra pieces show in the shape. Shenron coils around a central column, while Rayquaza rises above a cloud-topped base with more open space around it. One lego.com reviewer, Vincent Tang, wrote on October 13 that "the Rayquaza set could also have been more pieces to make the structural integrity much more firm", adding that "The bottom half of Rayquaza seems to be more fragile feeling".

Availability and timing

Rayquaza has been on sale since August 1 and read Available now on Oct 24 with a limit of 2. Shenron cannot be ordered yet. lego.com says "Coming soon on November 4, 2026" and offers LEGO Insiders early access from November 1 to 3; Insiders membership is free to join. Our LEGO Insiders early access guide explains the start times.

Neither set carried the Retiring soon badge on lego.com that day.

Desk note: our catalog read both sets 12 times between Oct 10 and Oct 23. Rayquaza read Available now every time, and Shenron read "Coming soon on November 4, 2026" every time; the date did not move once. Rayquaza is not about to sell out, so there is no rush to pick it just because it ships today.

Winner on this axis: Rayquaza, by about two weeks.

Analysis: is Shenron worth $50 more?

On the numbers, yes. You pay 38% more and get 63% more pieces, at a lower price per piece, by our arithmetic. The community reaction on Shenron's reveal day said the same thing more bluntly. On r/lego on September 29, u/ExtraaThicccc wrote:

"I like the Rayquaza set and I get that it's $50 cheaper, but this is what that set should've been. This is awesome."

Reddit, r/lego · Open the thread

In the same thread u/Drop_Release went further: "the Rayquaza absolutely pales in comparison". Both comments were posted on reveal day, from LEGO's official pictures of Shenron.

Rayquaza's owners are kinder to it than the reveal thread. It holds 4.4 stars from 20 reviews on lego.com, though 13% are one-star and its Value for Money score is 3.7. ILOVEMONKIEKID, a five-star reviewer, wrote that "The zinnia minifgure is the best part of the set in my opinion". If you collect Pokémon rather than dragons, that minifigure and the Sky Pillar are reasons Shenron cannot match.

Our take

What we don't know yet: how Shenron's build holds up, since no lego.com reviews exist until it ships. On our watchlist: both product pages on November 1 and 4, and Shenron's first reviews.

We haven't built either set; build impressions above are quoted from builders who have. This take uses only the lego.com data and sources cited above, checked Oct 24, 2026.

How we checked this

We read both lego.com product pages on Oct 24 in a headless desktop browser for price, pieces, status and Rayquaza's reviews. Shenron's size and description come from its product page read on Oct 10, and its launch from the LEGO newsroom; Rayquaza's size and launch come from LEGO's July newsroom post. Stock history comes from our own catalog reads since Oct 10. Reddit comments come from the thread data through Arctic Shift. Price per piece and points are our arithmetic. A second pass matched every number with our source table.
