LEGO Sanctum Sanctorum: $99.99 67005 or the Retired 76218

76218 vs 67005: how much shelf each one takes

The heights are close. lego.com gives 76218 as 32 cm high and 67005 as 29 cm. The depth is where they split.

At 6 cm deep, 67005 is mostly front wall. The Brick Fan calls it "a facade of the Sanctum Sanctorum", and the numbers agree. 76218 has 26 cm for its museum, library and ground floor, and lego.com adds that "Many of the model’s walls and elements can be reconfigured".

The two also plug into different things. lego.com sells 67005 as part of the Marvel World Building Collection, sets built on "the same modular design". 76218's page doesn't use that name. It says the set is "compatible with other LEGO® Sets for Adults".

Winner on space: 67005, about one-seventh of the footprint for 3 cm less height.

Minifigures: three Stranges or Strange Supreme

76218 has the bigger cast. Its nine minifigures are Doctor Strange, Wong, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Ebony Maw, Master Mordo, Sinister Strange, Dead Strange and The Scarlet Witch. That is three versions of Stephen Strange in one box.

67005 has six, all from the What If...? and Marvel Zombies side: Strange Supreme, F.R.I.D.A.Y., Zombie Hunter Spider-Man, Red Queen, Zombie Namor and Zombie Thor. It adds six posing sticks and small extras such as Throg and the Book of Vishanti. It is also the only one of the five without the regular Doctor Strange.

The older sets are thinner. 76060 has three figures and 76185 four. 76108 has four minifigures and a Cull Obsidian big figure.

Winner on figures: 76218, nine against six, and three of them are Strange.

Price per piece, and the one you can actually buy

On list prices 76218 was the better deal, 9.2 cents a piece against 12.3 for 67005. It cost 2.5 times as much and gave 3.3 times the pieces. That comparison stops mattering once a set is retired. lego.com no longer sells 76218, so its price is whatever a seller asks, and we don't track resale prices.

67005 has its own catch. On Nov 3 the US page read Coming soon, dated January 1, with no Add to Bag button. It can't be under a tree this year except as an IOU. The 9+ mark is no reason to skip it: lego.com pitches the set to "teens and adults" as "a stunning display piece", and our guide to LEGO age ranges explains what the marks mean.

LEGO doesn't publish retirement dates, and none of the four retired pages gives one. If you want a big 18+ Marvel building from lego.com before the holidays, X-Mansion 76294 is $329.99 for 3,093 pieces, but it read Sold out under the Retiring soon badge on Nov 3. Our LEGO X-Mansion 76294 retiring page tracks it.

Winner on value: 67005. 76218's 9.2 cents is a 2022 price that lego.com no longer offers.

Analysis: a smaller Sanctum for people who skipped the big one

The r/LegoMarvel reveal thread drew 130 votes and 16 comments from Oct 28. One comment, from u/lensherr_nl, already holds the decision:

"3x the price" is the commenter's figure. At list price the gap was 2.5 times. The point holds either way: 67005 is for people who want the building on the shelf and can live without the 2,708-piece project. u/mcputters, who has "all the large builds of the Marvel buildings", put it in terms of room: "part of me, mainly the space in my house, wishes I’d got these smaller versions of them all."

An owner of 76218 had a different reason to buy. u/Significant-Coat-308 wrote: "I already have the modular sanctum but might buy this just for parts." Jay's Brick Blog calls 67005 "a decent compromise if you want a Sanctum Sanctorum". That is three comments in a 16-comment thread, so treat it as a first reaction.

Desk note: By our arithmetic on lego.com's dimensions, 67005 covers about 114 cm² of shelf against 806 cm² for 76218, while standing 29 cm tall against 32. From the front it is nearly the same height; from the side it is under a quarter as deep.

Our take

Pick 67005 if you want a Sanctum on the shelf in 2027; it is the only one lego.com will sell. It is $99.99 for 814 pieces and needs about a seventh of 76218's footprint.

Buy 67005 if you collect the Marvel street buildings or have 6 cm of shelf depth to spare. Hunt for 76218 if you want the 2,708-piece 18+ build with nine figures, and you accept a seller's price instead of LEGO's $249.99.

What we don't know yet: whether US pre-orders open before January 1, and how many Insiders points 67005 will list. On our watchlist: we re-check the 67005 page weekly until launch, and again on launch day.

We haven't built any of these sets; opinions above are quoted from linked fans and fan sites. This take uses only the lego.com data and sources cited above, checked Nov 3.

How we checked this

On the afternoon of Nov 3 (US time) we opened the lego.com US product pages of all five sets, their LEGO building instructions pages and lego.com's search results for "sanctum" and "doctor strange" in a browser, and read the product page data behind them. Retired pages keep their last list price there; the years are from the instructions pages; sizes are LEGO's. Per-piece and footprint figures are our arithmetic. Brickset blocked our browser, so the piece counts are lego.com's alone. The Reddit quotes come from one public thread, read by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many LEGO Insiders points will 67005 earn? lego.com shows no points figure for 67005 yet.
