Retiring
How to Tell if a LEGO Set Is Retiring: 5 Checks That Work

How to tell if a LEGO set is retiring comes down to one label on one page: the Retiring soon badge on the set's own lego.com product page. Everything else, from fan-site dates to Reddit lists, is somebody's reading of that badge. We checked it on October 10, 2026 for our retiring lists, reading lego.com's Retiring soon page and dozens of product pages, and the same five checks kept answering the question. They are below, in the order we would run them.
TL;DR: 1) Open the product page and look for Retiring soon above the price. 2) Read the stock label: Available now, back order, Sold out or Retired Product. 3) Do not trust the Retiring soon category alone: it showed 274 products on October 10, 2026 and left out sold-out sets with the badge. 4) Treat fan-site dates (usually December 31 or July 31) as estimates. 5) If the set is Available now and badged, decide now.
How to tell if a LEGO set is retiring (quick answer)
Go to the set's page on lego.com. If it shows the Retiring soon label next to the theme name, lego.com plans to stop selling it. There is no date on the page. The stock label beside the price tells you how much time you have in practice.
Key Takeaways
- The badge is the only official signal. lego.com shows Retiring soon on the product page, with no date.
- The Retiring soon category is incomplete. It listed 274 products on October 10, 2026, but sold-out sets with the badge, like 75389 The Dark Falcon, were missing from it.
- Stock labels matter more than dates. Available now, Will ship in 60 days, Sold out and Retired Product each mean something different.
- Fan-site dates move. Brick Fanatics says retirement dates "are subject to change (and frequently do)".
- Retired sets end up on BrickLink, which LEGO's own help page points to.
Overview: what lego.com tells you and what it does not
lego.com has two places that show retirement. The first is the product page, where the label Retiring soon sits above the price, next to other badges such as Exclusives. The second is the Retiring soon category (the old /retiring-soon address now lands on a page called last-chance-to-buy), which read "274 products" when we loaded it on October 10, 2026.
What lego.com does not give you is a date. LEGO's help article on retired sets explains the why in one line: "sometimes we stop making older sets to make room for new ideas!" It then points buyers who missed a set to BrickLink. It says nothing about when.
Fan sites fill the gap. Brick Fanatics' January 5, 2026 list starts from the premise that "Every single LEGO set has a retirement date" and that "This date is when those models will leave factory lines and no longer be produced consistently." Those dates are useful, but they are not LEGO's, and they change.

Step-by-Step: 5 checks to tell if a LEGO set is retiring
These are the checks we ran on October 10, 2026, with real examples from that day.
1. Open the product page and look for the badge. Search lego.com for the set number and open its page. On 10351 Sherlock Holmes: Book Nook, the label Retiring soon sits right above "LEGO Icons #10351", and the price below it reads $129.99, Available now, Limit 3. If the label is there, the set is retiring. If it is not, lego.com has not said so, whatever a list online claims.
2. Read the stock label next to the price. The badge says what will happen; the stock label says what is happening now. On October 10 we saw five versions:
- Available now: you can buy it today, often with an order limit (Limit 3 or Limit 5).
- Will ship in 60 days or a fixed ship date: on back order.
- Temporarily out of stock: no stock right now, no date given.
- Sold out: no Add to Bag button. 75389 The Dark Falcon ($179.99) showed Sold out with the Retiring soon badge still on.
- Retired Product: the set is gone from lego.com. 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 read "Retired Product" with no Add to Bag.
3. Do not rely on the Retiring soon category alone. The category page is convenient, but it drops sets that are sold out. On October 10, 42176 Porsche GT4 e-Performance Race Car ($169.99) and 42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover both had the badge and Sold out on their product pages and were missing from the category. Our LEGO Technic sets retiring in 2026 count found 22 Technic sets with the badge against 12 on the category page. For a full theme check, read the theme page and then open the product page of anything a fan list names.
4. Check a fan-site date, and label it as an estimate. Brick Fanatics keeps a running list. Its January 5, 2026 update sorts sets under "December 31, 2026" and "July 31, 2026". Its September 5, 2026 update warns that "Every LEGO set has a scheduled retirement date, and those dates are subject to change (and frequently do)". The Brick Fan's August 2026 list says "We can expect these sets to be retired by the end of the year or while supplies last." Use these for planning, not as a deadline.
5. Decide based on badge plus stock. Badge and Available now: the set can still sell out before any date, so decide now if you want it. Badge and Sold out: lego.com gave no restock date for any of the ones we checked, so look at other stores. No badge: the set is not on lego.com's list yet, even if a fan site has a date for it.

Sold out with no badge: the case that fools people
The reverse case trips people up too. 42158 NASA Mars Rover Perseverance ($99.99) read Sold out on October 10, 2026 but had no Retiring soon label. Brick Fanatics' January update had it in its July 31, 2026 group. So a set can disappear from lego.com without ever showing the badge in its final weeks, at least as far as a single-day check can tell. If a set you want sells out without the badge, the product page is still the place to check again, because it may be a stock gap rather than a retirement.
The Star Wars theme showed the same pattern from the other side. On October 10 the theme page had 17 sets with the badge, while the Retiring soon category filed 11 of them. Our LEGO Star Wars sets retiring in 2026 list covers all of them, plus 75389, which showed the badge only on its own page.

Tips from builders who track retirements
Reddit threads about retirement ask the same questions every year. A few answers are worth repeating, with the caveat that they are fans' experience, not LEGO policy.
On timing, u/sophisticaden_ wrote in r/lego in September 2024:
"Sets retire at the end of the year. They usually get labeled “retiring soon” around October. The average set lasts two years."
On stock, two replies in a May 2026 thread, "When a set says retiring soon, how soon exactly?", agree. u/afkas17 wrote that "popular sets often sell out well before their actual retirement date", and u/Stryker_T added that "Lego usually stops production months before and it’s just selling out of stock".
Three practical tips follow from what we saw on lego.com:
- Check the order limit. A low limit like Limit 3 on the Book Nook does not mean low stock, but it is the only quantity signal lego.com shows.
- Watch for back orders. "Will ship in 60 days" on a badged set is a sign the remaining stock is not on the shelf.
- Use Insiders points and promotions if you are buying anyway. Our LEGO Insiders early access guide explains how points post. Replies in the May 2026 thread plan retiring-set buys around double-points events; we have not tested that, so it is their advice, not ours.
Our take
Based on the lego.com pages and fan-site lists cited above, the reliable way to tell if a LEGO set is retiring is the product page, not a list. The badge is lego.com's own statement; the category page leaves out sold-out sets; fan-site dates are informed guesses that move. What actually decides whether you can still buy a set is the stock label, and on October 10, 2026 plenty of badged sets were already sold out with no date in sight. If you want a set that has the badge and still says Available now, waiting for December is the riskier choice.
How we checked this
On October 10, 2026 we read lego.com's Retiring soon category (274 products in the header) and opened the product pages of 10351, 43217, 40725, 75389, 42176, 42180, 42158 and 42143 in a desktop browser, copying each badge and stock label. We read LEGO's help article on retired sets, Brick Fanatics' January 5 and September 5, 2026 retiring lists and The Brick Fan's August 2026 list the same day, and copied the Reddit comments from the thread data. The Technic and Star Wars counts come from our own lists of the same date. A second pass compared every claim here with our source table.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you know if a LEGO set is retiring? Open the set's product page on lego.com and look above the price for the Retiring soon label. That badge is the only official signal. LEGO does not publish a date, so check the stock label next to it and treat any date you find on a fan site as an estimate.
What does Retiring soon mean on lego.com? It is lego.com's label for sets it plans to stop selling. The label gives no date. On October 10, 2026 the Retiring soon category held 274 products, but some sold-out sets with the badge, such as 75389 The Dark Falcon, were not in it and only showed it on their own pages.
When do LEGO sets retire? LEGO does not say. Fan sites date most retirements to December 31 or July 31: Brick Fanatics' January 2026 list uses both. Those dates are estimates and move. Brick Fanatics wrote in September 2026 that dates are subject to change and frequently do.
What is the difference between Sold out, Retired Product and Retiring soon? Retiring soon is a badge about the future. Sold out and Temporarily out of stock are stock labels for today. Retired Product means lego.com has stopped selling the set, as on 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 in October 2026. A set can show Retiring soon and Sold out at the same time.
Can a sold-out LEGO set with the Retiring soon badge come back in stock? lego.com does not say. On October 10, 2026 sold-out badge sets such as 42176 Porsche GT4 e-Performance showed no restock date. On r/legostarwars, u/Clockwork_Phoenix wrote in September 2026 that a badged set gets at most one more production run, which is a fan view, not LEGO's.
Where can you buy a LEGO set after it retires? LEGO's own help page sends you to BrickLink, which it calls often the best place to find retired sets and connect with other fans. Other retailers may also hold stock for a while. lego.com itself shows Retired Product and no Add to Bag button once a set is gone.
